Bond Minicar Estate – 1963 – Wonderful Rare Find
This is a Bond Minicar Mark G Estate manufactured in 1963. The Minicar was first introduced in 1949 by Sharp’s Commercials of Preston and the Mark G was the last and most advanced model, produced from 1961 to 1966. It featured a new style body incorporating front quarter lights, wind-up door windows, adjustable front seats and locking door handles! Later versions, as this one, had the more powerful Villiers 4T 250cc twin engine, with a 4 speed positive stop gearbox and Siba Dynastart. Bigger 10″ wheels and 7″ hydraulic brakes, with hydraulically damped trailing arm rear suspension improved the handling and the makers claimed 60 mph performance at 60 miles per gallon. A total of 3253 Mark G models was made and the survivors are supported by an enthusiastic owners’ club (www.bondownersclub.co.uk).
This car was purchased as a barn find by a previous owner five years ago. It had not been on the road since 1969 but was in sound, restorable condition. It received its first MOT for over 40 years in 2011 and has been in regular light use since. It has just passed the test again with flying colours and is now tested until April 2016. It is of course tax exempt.
Mechanically the car is in very good condition. It starts easily and has surprisingly lively performance. Cosmetically the body is sound. It has been hand coach painted and this could be improved upon but it polishes up well and looks smart. Much work has been done recently on the interior, using the correct grey vinyl material and it is now in very tidy condition.
This is a rare survivor that can be used immediately and improved at leisure. The club has an excellent spares operation, so it is easy to live with and of course Villiers engine back up is excellent. It comes with various books, manual and a parts list
This is a real head turner that attracts attention like nothing else. Everyone seems to have a Bond story to share so be prepared to draw a crowd whenever you venture out!
