Vanden Plas Princess 4 Litre R – 1966 – SOLD
We are really delighted to have this old friend back at Bradley James. We previously sold this wonderful example of the Princess 4 Ltr R Vanden Plas around 10 years ago just after she was restored to a very high standard. The lovely paintwork and grand interior are in great shape and she drives so very well. She has covered just 69482 miles since new.
The previous owner has adored her and kept this special car highly maintained and ready to be driven and enjoyed at any time. She drives wonderfully well and attracts loving looks and kind comments wherever she goes. A regular customer was keen to buy her almost as soon as she arrived in our showroom, however his intended trade-in car has taken longer to be repaired than planned and therefore is now being offered on our site.
The Princess was recently featured in the Classic Car Weekly publication and the features editor loved her too. I have a copy of the article available for inspection. The car is offered in very good order and is ready to enjoy straight away. There are some rather minor areas that are tough to spot on the bodywork that I will show in my usual walk-around video, plus the interior leather could be improved with some leather stain from ‘Woolies’…but I’m being fussy.
The coachwork is glorious and the chrome is wonderful, the wooden dash is quite lovely. Mechanically the car is spot on and she bursts into life and that very famous engine purrs just like a Rolls Royce should.
These Vanden Plas are a rare sight on our roads and numbers are falling. The cost of restoration has created something of a divide between cars that have been restored and cars that require restoration. This car was fully restored to a very high standard and was rebuilt regardless of cost. The lovely paintwork colour scheme really does set her apart from other VDP’s 4-Litres R’s that I have seen and I think this car will easily become somebodies pride and joy.
Please come and view this lovely car at our showroom in the North Hampshire countryside. We are based in Overton which is 10 minutes from the M3 motorway in Basingstoke or the A34 near Whitchurch. We are based 45 minutes from London by train and have a close by railway station.
We offer a part exchange service and can arrange nationwide delivery at very competitive rates.
A little about the Princess 4 Litre R:
The car was announced in 1964 and had a production run through to 1968 and almost 7000 were built.
The very good-looking Vanden Plas Princess 4-Litre R of was created out of the short-lived collaboration between Rolls-Royce/Bentley and BMC.
The ‘R’ of the name was shorthand for the 3909cc Rolls-Royce straight-six engine under the bonnet of a modified 3-Litre bodyshell. The 175bhp of the all-alloy unit meant that it was an easy car to drive – even without the extra refinement from the Borg Warner automatic transmission, power steering and servo-assisted front disc brakes.
The 4-Litre R was always a fine car to drive, and remains so to this day. The appealing addition of even more wood and leather inside than in the 3-Litre cars and easy performance made for a genuinely pleasurable car. Rolls-Royce even considered building its own version of the 4-Litre R as a Bentley.
That wonderful FB60 engine was a short-stroke version of the Rolls Royce Military B and more than 30,000 of those engines had already been produced. The 6-cylinder aluminum engine only weighed 450 Ib and it created an impressive 175 BHP. There are twin SU carburetors fitted and the tappets were hydraulic self-adjusting operating on overhead inlet and side exhaust valves. The counterbalanced crankshaft ran in seven bearings. The transmission was a super smooth Borg Warner Model 8 unit and the steering was the first British car to feature Hydrosteer variable ratio power steering with wider tyres than the previous car.
The car was priced on a par with the wonderful Jaguar MK X, it cost 50% more than her predecessor..the 3 litre car. The Princess has polished walnut fascia and hide padded dash at the top and bottom of the dashboard. The seats are fully hide upholstered with fully reclinable backs. Polished picnic tables for the rear passengers.
