The Hillman Minx first saw the light of day in 1931 and was launched as a mid sized family car. It ran extremely successfully through many different body styles and guises until the name bowed out in 1970. It had seen out ownership of the Hillman name pass through its original private ownership through to the conglomerate owned Rootes Group. In short it was about as synonymous with British Motoring culture for many decades as it was possible to achieve with sales numbers always being strong. From the mid 50’s to the late 60’s the Minx was the largest seller and earner for the company of the Rootes Group’s “Audax” range of cars which included the Singer Gazelle and the Sunbeam Rapier.
Launched late in 1961, the Super Minx was intended to replace the Minx Series III. In the end the Series III would be replaced in 1963 by the Series V, while the Super Minx was launched as a separate, albeit closely related, model with slightly larger body.
What Bradley James Classics are delighted to offer here is a 1964 Hillman Super Minx finished in a wonderful period two tone green colour scheme complimented by a light sage green interior. The car is in lovely order throughout but as with all cars that are in their mid fifties one has to set expectations accordingly and one has to expect a bit of ageing and patina along the way. The car is not a concours show winner but rather one that has been loved, cherished and repaired as necessary and as such is today a good useable reliable example.
In terms of externally she presents very well with bright paintwork which has a good lustre: it is good although has been touched up in places over the years as and when it has been required. We do like to see lots of original paint and a few touch ups rather than the over restored thousands of pounds spent on paintwork examples – they are more charming somehow and you can never recapture that period look with modern paint finishes. Her chrome is in nice original condition with slight pitting here and there as one would expect but it shines up very well indeed. Her hubcaps are all good as are her rim embellishers and she rides on nice recent good quality tyres, the spare being unused. Rock solid underneath and looks really nice.
Open any one of her doors and you are greeted with a lovely highly original interior that has again not been over restored. Her gorgeous sage green vinyl seats are in good original order and still very comfortable and supportive. The cars headlining is original and is free from rips or tears however is showing its age in places having a nice aged look in terms of colour. The car however does benefit from having new carpets throughout which makes all the difference and is very lush underfoot. Doorcards are all good and she benefits from having inertia reel front seatbelt fitted. Her dash has had a re-varnish at some stage and offers a lovely contrast to the green seats and carpeting. The rear parcel shelf is in excellent order. Everything operates as it should and you have that wonderful evocative smell inside that only a car from this era can muster.
Out on the road she performs excellently keeping up with the flow of modern traffic and has that wonderful parpy exhaust note that all cars of this era were famous for – it cant help but put a smile on your face when driving along and it gets attention wherever it goes – get used to being waved and peeped at, and no trip to the petrol station will be complete without the inevitable “My Grandad had one of these” comments. Under the bonnet she looks lovely and again highly original and not over restored. Showing 71,000 miles which may be accurate judging by the way she drives and the condition of her interior but with any car of this age is difficult to be 100% sure.
In summary this is a lovely highly original instant time capsule to a bygone era. She presents very well and has attracted much admiration from anyone that has seen her since we have had her in stock. Not a concours example but rather one you can jump in, use reliably, attend classic car shows with and have a lot of fun and you can improve her over time if you see fit. Priced sensibly she is a good future investment and as like all cars from the 1960’s fewer and fewer are coming onto the open market these days as people really are tending to hang onto them now as they appreciate what they represent and how enjoyable owing a car from this era can be.
