Land Rover Lightweight 1973 - Walk Around Video
MOT & Tax exempt - 50k miles displayed.
This is a great opportunity to buy a fully restored Land Rover Lightweight Series 3 from 1973 - the car was fully restored from the chassis upwards in 2016 and has only covered a few thousand miles since.
The Landy is desirable model to either add to a classic vehicle collection....or to use as your daily driver! - the car drives extremely well and is capable of doing 60 MPH down the motorway if so required.
The Lightweight Land Rover have a fascinating history as military vehicles that were designed to be 'air transportable' and therefore they were built by Land Rover to a specification of the UK military. They were based on the standard civilian series 2A and then series 3 Land Rovers, however they were fundamentally redesigned to be no more than 2500 LBS (1134 KGS), due to the payload of the Westlands Wessex helicopter. They were made with a reduced width chassis and axles (4") so they could be loaded onto a ship pallet and placed inside an aircraft side by side with another lightweight. The panels needed to be quick and easy to remove for use in the battle field, they often would be transported in a semi stripped state and required partial rebuilding prior to use.
The lightweight was built between 1968 and 1984, there were almost 38 thousand made and the last one came out of service in 2009!....the Lightweight for sale is a series 3 example and these were produced from 1972, the series 3 enjoyed a few upgrades over the previous model model (the 2A), the gearbox was revised and has synchromesh in 2nd gear as well as 3rd and 4th gear, there is an alternator to replace the dynamo and the indicator stalk had a horn and main beam flash added. Otherwise the models were pretty similar.
The car has the well regarded and trusty 2.25cc 4 cylinder 73 BHP petrol engine, this is a OHV engine with a 3 bearing crankshaft. This particular example comes with the very useful overdrive gear box (hence the 60 MPH cruising capability) - the Land Rover has disengagaeble 4WD and also a hi/low ratio range for use in the field and off road. The braking system is drum all round with twin brake cylinders on each wheel.
The Landy has a new canvas roof (black) for the cabin area (it is also possible to add a full length canvas if so required).
There are some improvements which I shall highlight below:
Extended fuel filler (meaning fuel can be added without having to lift the seats) - civilian fuel tank added to achieve this.
4x wolf wheels and 4 almost new Insa Ranger Turbo tyres (ideal for these cars)
Triumph Dolomite steering wheel (far improves access and steering for the larger/taller driver)
Tow bar fitted with drop plate.
The car was fully rebuilt in 2016 and therefore the chassis and bulkhead are prefect, the car is totally rust free and fully waxoyled for protection.
The engine runs very sweetly and starts on the turn of the key first time. The head is adapted to run on unleaded fuel.
The Landy needs nothing and is ready to enjoy and drive away now.
